One key ingredient within the recipe for human flourishing that is explored in the domain of positive psychology is that of positive emotions, a core element of the PERMA Wellbeing model formulated by Martin Seligman (2011). Frederickson’s extensive work in this field has helped us understand the pivotal role that positive emotions play in human flourishing.
That is, they broaden people’s attention and thinking, undo negative emotional arousal, fuel psychological resilience, build consequential personal resources and trigger upward spirals toward greater well-being in the future (Garland et al 2010 – click here to access full paper). So, positive emotions done just feel good….they do us good too.
There is no question that being positive is a good thing, but how much of a good thing is enough to relieve languishing and move towards flourishing? Research carried out by Frederickson and mathematician, Marcial Losada (2005) went on to formulate the positivity ratio. They determined that there is an optimal balance of positive to negative emotions, which triggers mental flourishing, and an upward developmental spiral, below which we languish.
The ratio needs to be at least 3:1 positive to negative.
This applies to individuals, relationships, and teams. Why not assess your current ratio by taking the positivity self – test (It can be accessed for free at Frederickson’s website www.positivityresonance.com)
Whilst the mathematical basis of the ratio formulation has more recently come into question, there is no doubt that flourishing mental health is associated with higher positivity ratios than is non-flourishing (Catalino & Frederickson 2011; Frederickson 2013).
